If you’ve read the recent blog, Lactobacillus reuteri raises testosteroneyou might wish to take L. reuteri. The idea that changing the microbiome can increase testosterone production is interesting to a lot of members. But before you start swallowing L. reuteri capsules, remember that it is only one of a multitude of microbiota in your gut. So increasing concentrations of just that one microbe might cause an imbalance of other vital microbes – leading to unknown consequences.

A strategy of increasing Lactobacillus strains overall with a slight emphasis on L. reuteri is worth consideration. With a core diet that includes some naturally fermented food like sauerkrautyou could add a specific source of L. reuteri. But be careful: One popular source we found included lots of ingredients most members would not want to put in their bodies. L. reuteri was last on the list, thus likely to be in the lowest concentration:

Ingredients: Corn Maltodextrin, Whey Protein Concentrate (From Cow’s Milk, Enzymatically Hydrolyzed, Reduced In Minerals), Vegetable Oils (Palm Olein, Soy, Coconut, And High-Oleic Safflower Or High-Oleic Sunflower), Calcium Phosphate, And Less Than 2% Of: Potassium Citrate, Potassium Phosphate, Calcium Chloride, Sodium Citrate, Magnesium Chloride, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenate, M. Alpina Oil*, C. Cohnii Oil**, Sodium Ascorbate, Inositol, Choline Bitartrate, Alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate, Niacinamide, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Vitamin A Acetate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Folic Acid, Phylloquinone, Biotin, Vitamin D3, Vitamin B12, Taurine, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Mixed Tocopherols, Carrageenan, L-Carnitine, Soy Lecithin, Lactobacillus Reuteri (Dsm 17938) Cultures.

Another source could be kefir. Lifeway® has it on its ingredient list. Previously a class action suit was filed against this manufacturer for not having the contents as listed actually in its product. Then there is the problem that highly absorbable milk proteins from sources like kefir cause increases in insulin, IGF-I, and probably mTOR.

Nature’s Way® Primadophilus® Reuteri  includes these probiotic ingredients:

Bifidobacterium Longum
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus
Lactobacillus Acidophilus
Bifidobacterium Infantis
Lactobacillus Reuteri

This product is sold refrigerated in health foods so if you decide to order it or something like it from an online supplier, make sure it is packed in ice for shipping so it stays cold.

Let’s say you do find a source of L. reuteri you are happy with and, indeed, notice an increase in libido from taking it. Are you taking a long-term risk? Testosterone is linked to risk for breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men.
So arranging to have a blood test for testosterone (and PSA for men) would be prudent. A sudden, significant increase in either would be cause for decreasing your L. reuteri intake or stopping it completely.
