Wheatgrass to improve your oral microbiome? I was skeptical.
Yet, over the past several days, I must admit, we’ve implemented an important change in our morning regimen: pulling, that is, pulling bacteria from our gums and using wheatgrass juice to do it.
The whole thing started with a conversation about optimizing the oral microbiome at the recent open forum teleconference of June 25, 2016.Here, knowledgeable CR Way members informed us of the ayurvedic practice of swishing your mouth with oil to remove pathogenic bacteria. No sooner did we find research supporting that practice then we happened upon a YouTube video with a different point of view – Use wheatgrass in place of oil.
Normally, we would be skeptical about such videos since no supporting research is offered. However, looking into the effects of wheatgrass on the body’s microbiomes turned up this study,Wheat grass juice in the treatment of active distal ulcerative colitis: a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial. So, we decided to try it and take it a step further – test it. Both Meredith and I sent in samples for oral microbiome analyses before starting “pulling” and will do so again after we get the results of our first sample – our baselines.
