We wish you were standing in the same room as us. We’d give you a hug and stimulate your oxytocin. Then we’d invite you to go on a brisk walk and increase your endorphins. Having worked up an appetite, we would ask you to sit down with us for a delicious noon-time meal, featuring your favorite food so you could enjoy some dopamine – especially now that we’ve told you and you can look forward to it. And to top it all off, after having hours of good conversation and maybe a game or two, that afternoon we’d serve you some Relaxation Soup for your last meal of the day to stimulate serotonin production. By the end of it all, you’d likely be a happy camper.
This is not fantasy. It is relatively easy to stimulate happiness biochemistry. Our Featured Guest on Sunday afternoon, January 26, Dr. Loretta Breuning, has done a lot of thinking about that. She’s written a book, Meet your Happy Chemicals.
We like it a lot because it offers some unique insights about how to improve your level of happiness, which increases your ability to enjoy a low-calorie lifestyle, helps prevent disease, will almost certainly help you live longer, and is guaranteed to make life more fun.
Speaking of happiness, the most successful CR Way travelers who are renowned centenarians are known for their happy, serene approach to life. Consider our mentor, Ralph Cornell. When you walked into his house, the sign on his wall said, “don’t complain about old age, it’s a privilege denied to many.” It was always a pleasure to see Ralph, and he was always laughing and joking about something. He lived independently and remained socially involved right through to his 104th birthday.
